Today, the world welcomes Oyster Love with open arms – the new EP baby from retro-esque duo Juno Francis (Angelica Ranåsen and Jacob Fagerstå). Self described as “the lovechild of a 60s gentleman and an 80s lady”, this Berlin based duo first caught my ears on Instagram with their track “Queen’s Anthem”, which yes, I do believe was written for me personally and remains one of my go-to songs.
The sonic journey of Oyster Love begins with “Follow the Stars”, a dreamy lil tune that makes me feel like I’m in a peaceful forest feeding deer and singing to squirrels. How delightful is that?
Next up is the title track, which is self described as “the darker side of a romantic world view and the sacrifices made to chase self-fulfillment”. As a former emo kid who has recently recently returned to bad habits, this track is a great representation of my anxiety and current state of mind. Upbeat, jivey keys that get you dancing and leaves a smile with some badass, darker lyrics that keep it real and leave you just a touch antsy.
FINALLY WE GET TO “FIGHT”, THE SONG THAT I CAN’T STOP HUMMING TO. It’s so magical and sensual, I can see this track closing out a Twin Peaks Season 3 episode. David Lynch, if you’re reading this, I have your next featured artist.
With the final touch, “I Wanna Run Away” – about the only thing I have to say about this track is SAME! I can’t think of a sentiment I’ve repeated more over the last six months than expressing how much I want to run away to live in a cave on the beach, completely isolated. However, I’d make an exception for Juno Francis. They’re welcome in my hideout any day, as long as they bring the slinkin’ grooves.
Listen to the EP in full here! You’ll have it on repeat all weekend. I say that a lot, but you should know by now that I’m not writing about a song or an artist unless I truly believe you can jam the heck out to it.
Can’t get enough of Juno Francis? Tune into Indie Pong’s Instagram Live TOMORROW at 11am PST for an exclusive interview with Angelica and Jacob.
Holllaaaaaa here’s some new songs for you thread your halloween costume together to. You can follow along on the Indie Pong Weekly Playlist which is HITTING this week, so be sure to check it out and blast that like button.
‘Dawntown’ – Godford
Love this whole album, lots of fun little name games going on. They have a version of this song called ‘Downtown’ that is slowed down and is also pretty tight. I like this one better though. Some other highlights were Better Place sporting some Can’t Do Without You vibes and Non Binary Place which is a sample of their own song ‘Better Place’. Love it.
‘Frontin’ Like Pharrell’ – DijahSB
This is not our first forray into Toronto-based DijahSB territory and it comes as no surprise that this song and entire album are entirely repeatable and completely undeniable. Really enjoyed.
‘SUPERNOVAS’ – K-OS
Canadian rapper K-OS (pronounced chaos) goes off on this house-infused dance banger produced by MSTRKRFT.
‘Shellys (It’s Chill) – Blimes and Gab
I’m just gonna keep it 100% real with you- this is an instant contender for SOTY for me. If I had caught this one before I made my odds we might have been looking at a different situation. Also this video is funny af, we all know a Shelly. Mine is Jen. Just kidding. That was actually a joke. Don’t tell Jen, I don’t think she reads these anyway so we should be good. But like, don’t tell her.
As you can tell we’re off to a sizzling fajita pan of a start here for the week(ish) and it’s not about to let up so strap in.
‘Ferris Wheel’ – Sylvan Esso
Yeah I mean you already know who it is and what it is and how it is- this song slaps. The whole album slaps in fact, been bumping it all week. TBT (it’s still Thursday for me as I’m writing this) to one of my faves, check it out if you could use a good cry but don’t have time to watch The Color Purple all the way through:
‘Call You Out’ – deryk
Oh maannnnnnnn this song… oof. So hauntingly perfect, deryk navigates the melody over the music masterfully here. Full review (kind of) here. There also may or may not be a fun surprise coming up…
‘Don’t Let Me Die In Hollywood’ – Sean Kennedy
This is a great track and I love it and I can also relate to it because I live in LA and the two things everyone always say about me are that I’m 1. young and 2. misunderstood, so this was basically written about me.
I can’t find any info on Sean online so I can’t tell you where he’s from. I’m like the worst blogger in the world, sorry.
‘Day We Met’ – Fatima Yamaha
Fatima does it again. One time I made my friend Austin late to the Fatima Yamaha show at FYF and he was all bent out of shape about it, huffing and puffing his way around the festival, but then Fatima was at the same afterparty we were at (which was either Avalon Emerson or Helena Hauf) and Austin bought him an overpriced shot of Jameson and talked about it all night like a little kid who just went to the zoo for the first time.
‘Along Alright’ – Dialup Ghost
Thoroughly enjoyed this whole album. Some high quality Lo-fi vibes.
‘Idols’ – Jeen
I love this song so much, and also want to do it like we did it back in high school. Full abum just released a few hours ago, haven’t listened yet but can’t wait.
‘Queen Anthem’ – Juno Francis
You might recognize this one from our playlist a few months ago because it’s a tHrOwBaCk!!! We’re fortunate enough to have a LIVE INTERVIEW with Juno scheduled for this Saturday at 11am PT, don’t miss it! Live on our Instagram 🙂
‘You You’ – EGOISM
Love this track, infectiously catchy from the Australian band EGOISM.
‘Post Humorous’ – Gus Dapperton
Top quality pop right here.
‘M.O’ – Braille Face
Chillingly beautiful. Seriously one of the more beautiful things I’ve ever heard.
‘In Another Life’ – Polartropica
We loooooove us some Polartropica. Check out Cassie’s full interview with PT (including a special performance tee hee) on our Instagram.
‘Harbor Blvd’ – Josh Dominguez, Sage One The Wise
These singles somehow just keep getting better. I’m not from the OC but if I was I’m sure this is all I would listen to. Banger.
‘Not My Boss’ – Blue Hawaii
Just gonna let this last one speak for itself.
Thanks for reading y’all, these songs and even more on our weekly(ish) playlist!
